The meeting was to observe the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, which falls on. September 16 since 1995.

Yu Xiaoyuan, deputy director of BOCOG Construction & Environment Department, briefed the attendees on the Beijing Olympics organizing committee's effort to protect the ozone layer.

Since 2002, BOCOG has compiled environmental guidelines for the Olympic project construction/renovation, Olympic catering service, accommodation, marketing, and large-scale events and rejected Ozone depleting substances in the procurement of air-conditioners, fire-extinguishing equipment and construction materials.

Current BOCOG criteria in refrigerant selection and use for the air-conditioning system, vehicles and refrigerating equipment have reached the international standard for developed countries. BOCOG will take a new step to strictly check on the selection of air-conditions for catering, food cooling storage and temporary facilities to make them meet the top level of the international standard.

Meanwhile, BOCOG will work along with the State Environmental Protection Administration and UNEP to give publicity to the protection of the ozone layer.

During the meeting, Marco Gonzalez, executive secretary of UNEP Ozone Secretariat and Yu Xiaoxuan conveyed support for each other's work in ozone protection and related publicity in the spirit of the memorandum of understanding signed on Nov. 18, 2005 between the two parties.

Wang Min, governor of Jilin province, Zhu Guangyao, vice minister of the State Environmental Protection Administration, and representatives of the Multilateral Fund, the World Bank, United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and China's relevant ministries and local bureaus attended the meeting.
