-- On May 20, 2006, the 2,309-m (7,575-ft) long Three Gorges Dam, the world's largest hydroelectric project, is completed.

-- The Qinghai-Tibet railway is put into operation on July 1. Some 1,000 km of the tracks sit 4,000 m above sea level. The railway connects Tibet with the heartland and plays an important role in boosting the local economy.
