Southern Medical University (SMU) is one of the national key universities of higher learning and a research-intensive institution with students coming from about 19 countries. It is also one of the universities offering Chinese Government Scholarship. Located in Guangzhou, the metropolitan city in South China, there are three campuses covering the total area of 1.77 million square meters.
SMU, the former First Military Medical University, was founded in 1951. In 2004, the First Military Medical University was handed over to the local government of Guangdong Province and renamed as Southern Medial University.
SMU boasts its scope and variety of disciplines ranging from medicine, technology and engineering, law, management, literature, pedagogy to economics. There are 16 schools offering 26 full-time undergraduate / Bachelor programs. The M.Sc and Ph.D. programs have covered the major subjects of medical science. SMU is proud of its faculty, including over 700 professors and 100 prestigious international experts and scholars as guest professors.
Today, SMU has four direct affiliated hospitals, 2 of which have been appraised as "First-Class Hospitals at Grade III". Those hospitals have gained superiority and developed their own distinctive features in diagnosis and treatment. Besides, there are more than 19 indirect affiliated hospitals and near hundred hospitals as its teaching and clinical practice venues.
