Expat Show Shanghai kicks off

More than 10,000 visitors and 150 exhibitors are expected to take part in the three-day Expat Show Shanghai, which starts on Sept 8 at the Shanghai Exhibition Center. Since 2007, the Expat Show Shanghai has aimed to create the best international lifestyle platform for all communities to find information, products and services they need for everyday life in Shanghai. Expats are invited to share about their experiences in settling in a new country, making new friends, participating in cultural or recreational activities and contributing their time and skills to charities in Shanghai.

Classic novels in English and Chinese

The Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press recently published the Chinese-English version of The Three Kingdoms, and this means that China's four greatest novels are now available in these two languages, according to the Shanghai Morning Post. The effort to have these classic novels translated into English was started in 2008 and involved several renowned international translators. The other three novels are A Dream of Red Mansions, The Marshes of Mount Liang and A Journey to the West.

Increased capacity at the city's port

The completion of Shanghai's automated terminal, the fourth phase of the Yangshan Port project, by the end of this year will enable Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) to handle over 40 million TEU (20-foot equivalent unit) containers, the combined volume of the top nine ports in the United States, or one-tenth the total capacity of all global ports, ThePaper.cn reported.

US imports and exports on the rise

Shanghai customs said it has seen a surge in exports and imports to and from the United States in the first seven months of this year. Imports from the US surged 27.1 percent to 153.29 billion yuan from January to July while exports grew 13.9 percent to 448.26 billion yuan. Imports of US automobiles were worth 16.25 billion yuan, up 20 percent year-on-year.
