By the second half of 2017, with the large area victory of the government forces in the war, the overall situation in Syria had stabilized, however, the local situation was still severe. "I was awakened by a big explosion at 5 o'clock as the hotel is only about 1,000 meters away from the blast site." Li wrote in the diary after the day she arrived in Damascus, the capital of Syria.

According to her, Damascus's urban area was relatively safe at that time. Quite a few shops or street stalls were running normal business, and even lots of teenagers had began working in the street. "I truly felt the enthusiasm of the Syrian people, as they sent me various small gifts such as candy, pomegranate juice, and bread," Li said.
