13 kids with heart disease get free care

Thirteen Mongolian children suffering from congenital heart disease have received free medical treatment at a hospital in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia autonomous region, local authorities said on Tuesday. The children arrived on Dec 24 and started receiving operations at Inner Mongolia People's Hospital on Dec 26. They were on their way back to Mongolia on Tuesday after successful surgeries. The service is part of the second phase of a humanitarian aid program by the Red Cross Society of China, which started in June last year and plans to provide 100 sick Mongolian children with free heart operations.

Ancient kiln site from Han Dynasty found

A large-scale ancient kiln site was found in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, the regional archaeological research institute said on Monday. The site, dating back to China's Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220) was unearthed in ancient city ruins near Hohhot, the capital of the region. The unearthed items include eight brick kilns and one tomb, among which pillar holes were found in each kiln. The discovery will offer rich materials for studying the architecture of kilns in the Han Dynasty and the cultural and economic importance of ancient cities in the region, said researchers with the institute.

Cosmic observatory becoming functional

A giant observatory in Sichuan province to search for the origin of cosmic rays is half completed, and thousands of its detectors have been put into operation, according to the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The project, known as the Large High-Altitude Air Shower Observatory, is 4.41 kilometers above sea level on Haizi Mountain. Since April, it has launched over 2,000 detectors that will probe cosmic rays and provide data for scientists. LHAASO is expected to offer a unique perspective on the origin of cosmic rays, which are highly penetrative rays from outer space, said Cao Zhen, chief scientist of the project and a researcher with the Institute of High Energy Physics of the CAS. The whole project will be completed in 2021, according to the CAS.
