The US chip giant Micron Technology Inc on Monday announced a new lab with Lenovo Group Ltd and LCFC Electronics Technology Co, Lenovo's largest manufacturing and research arm, to address growing demands from remote work and online gaming.

The joint lab represents the industry's first development facility to combine memory and storage expertise with an original design and equipment manufacturer, Micron said in a statement.

Mike Bokan, senior vice-president of Worldwide Sales at Micron, said fostering innovation, driving research and optimizing processes has always been a priority for Micron.

"Together with Lenovo and LCFC, we aim to identify and address technical issues at an early stage to ensure faster product time-to-market and ensure outstanding quality and performance to serve the needs of our customers and the industry," Bokan said.

The cooperation will focus on advancing PC and notebook development cycles as market demand for remote work, distance learning and online gaming continues to rise amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Micron said it will apply its knowledge to test and evaluate platforms and bring differentiated products for client system optimization dependent on memory and storage requirements. This collaboration not only opens the door to strengthen Lenovo's development capacity, but it also aligns roadmap and feature adoption to propel breakthroughs in performance, power efficiency and mobility for personal computing devices.

Jeremy Yuan, R&D general manager at LCFC, said a joint lab with Micron allows the companies to collaborate under one roof with combined specialized engineering and resources to accelerate development of cutting-edge new features and products for customers.

"Micron's wealth of knowledge will radically improve the speed and quality of R&D decisions and deliverables," Yuan said.
