Shanghai Metro expands paper single-journey tickets

The Shanghai Metro has begun expanding its pilot program for new automated ticket vending machines that dispense paper QR code single-journey tickets.

Instead of the conventional IC cards that needed to be returned upon exit, the new machines dispense paper tickets featuring QR codes. These tickets display essential information, including fare amount, date of purchase, and station details.

The new system, which was first introduced at People's Square station two years ago, is now being gradually implemented across various stations throughout the network.

"The new system operates more intelligently, with a smoother process overall," Cui Junjie, the station manager at Oriental Sports Center station, told local media Paper.com, where three new ticket vending machines have been installed at both entrances 1 and 4.

"The machines represent an improvement in both appearance and performance, featuring a more prominent design and enhanced responsiveness in screen operation and cash handling," Cui said.

The new machines maintain versatility in payment options, accepting both cash and online payments to accommodate various passenger preferences. Since the trial operation began at Oriental Sports Center station on Aug 1, the new machines have been issuing an average of 65 paper tickets daily.

However, some elderly passengers have experienced initial confusion with the payment process, particularly when attempting to scan payment QR codes. Some users also noted that the route map displayed on the machines appears somewhat crowded with small text.

Addressing concerns about the environmental impact of non-recyclable paper tickets, Shanghai Metro officials explained that the new system actually represents an improvement in operational efficiency.

The fare structure remains consistent with traditional single-journey tickets as pricing is based on travel distance, tickets are valid only on the day of purchase for a single journey, and do not support transfer exits.

Unlike traditional tickets that needed to be inserted and collected at exit gates, passengers can keep these paper tickets as souvenirs if they wish.
