The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) supported 58,800 science fund projects last year, allocating a total of 37.07 billion yuan ($5.38 billion), according to NSFC Director Dou Xiankang.

"Over the past year, the NSFC strengthened the systematic layout of basic research, reshaped the funding structure for talent development, reinforced its role in science and technology strategy consultation, deepened global scientific exchanges and collaboration, and enhanced research integrity," Dou said at a plenary session of the foundation in Beijing.

Dou noted that the foundation completed its annual funding and management tasks by focusing on directing science and technology resources to frontline researchers with the greatest innovation potential. These efforts included introducing pilot projects for major non-consensus initiatives, establishing joint funds for innovation and development with private enterprises, developing a dedicated track for young research teams, and further implementing the global science and research fund.

"During the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-30), the foundation aims to significantly enhance capabilities for basic research and original innovation, strengthen support for major national needs and socioeconomic development, accelerate the growth of high-level basic research talent and teams, and help shape a globalized, open innovation ecosystem," he stated.

Minister of Science and Technology Yin Hejun acknowledged the foundation's role in promoting high-quality basic research and supporting the construction of a science and technology powerhouse. He emphasized the importance of seizing historic opportunities presented by the new technological revolution and industrial transformation, staying informed of international science and technology competition dynamics, and deepening the understanding of the mission and positioning of basic research.

"The foundation should strengthen the strategic, forward-looking, and systematic layout of basic research, continue to deepen the reform of the science foundation system, foster a favorable ecosystem for basic research, and persistently enhance regulatory oversight," Yin said. He added that these initiatives will support researchers in overcoming new bottlenecks in science and technology, accelerate progress toward self-reliance and strength in these fields, and contribute to building a science and technology powerhouse.

Additionally, the session reviewed and approved a draft outline for the foundation's 15th Five-Year Plan, a report on the implementation of the 2025 budget and the 2026 budget plan, as well as a report on the 2025 funding status and the preliminary funding plan for 2026.
