Guangdong plans diversified green power system by 2030
At a press conference in Guangzhou on Wednesday, a senior Guangdong official laid out the province's plans to build a diversified and green power supply security system in line with its intention to develop its clean energy industry during the 15th five-year-plan period (2026-30).
The plans include developing safe and efficient nuclear power, offshore wind power, utility-scale photovoltaic power, and regulated power sources such as pumped storage and new-type hydropower, according to Gong Zhenzhi, director general of the Guangdong Provincial Development and Reform Commission.
Guangdong plans to bring in clean energy from outside the province, including power generated from the Gobi desert and other renewable energy bases, as well as hybrid hydro-wind-solar projects. At the same time, the province will make better use of gas-fired power to help balance the grid. Gong said they will work to keep existing gas plants running through market-based measures and improve how natural gas is used.
"Energy and electricity demand in Guangdong is expected to continue to show rapid growth in the following years," Gong said. To ensure a reliable power supply, the province plans to promote utility-scale photovoltaic power and build regulated power sources, such as pumped storage and new-type hydropower.
During the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25), Guangdong witnessed rapid growth in natural gas consumption, and has ranked first nationwide in this regard for consecutive years, he said, adding that in 2025, Guangdong ranked first in terms of installed natural gas power capacity, accounting for roughly one-third of the national total and one-fifth of the province's total.
Natural gas supply in Guangdong has mainly come from imported LNG, accounting for more than 50 percent of the total.
