For the third consecutive year, oriental storks — a bird species classified as first-class protected wildlife in China — have nested and bred in the East Dongting Lake National Nature Reserve in Yueyang, Hunan province. Recently, a family of these birds was observed building their nest notably closer to human activity.

Earlier this week, staff members at the nature reserve spotted two adult storks diligently guarding four chicks in a nest perched on a 20-meter-tall iron tower. The chicks, approximately two-weeks-old, were seen stretching their necks, flapping their small wings and snuggling together — a heart-warming indication of successful breeding.

"This marks the third consecutive year we have recorded oriental storks nesting and breeding here," said Li Feiyun, head of the science and technology department of the reserve's administration bureau.

Since last year, the reserve has observed up to 79 oriental storks at one time, Li said.

More surprisingly, he added, the storks have been found nesting closer to areas where people live and work.

"They seem less afraid of humans," he said.

"Perhaps they have developed trust in the environment and the people here."

The oriental stork is known to be "picky" about its habitat, Li said, requiring clean water, abundant fish and amphibians as food sources, and a quiet environment — especially when raising chicks. The growing populations of fish and shrimp in the lake's shallows, thanks to the Yangtze River fishing ban and ecological restoration efforts, have made the area ideal for breeding.

In recent years, the city of Yueyang has intensified efforts in patrols, law enforcement and public awareness campaigns to protect East Dongting Lake as a crucial stopover for migratory birds, according to Tong Zheng, head of the reserve's administration.
