China has launched its first nationwide pilot program integrating professional education with standardization training, marking a significant step forward in developing a workforce equipped with both specialized knowledge and standardization skills.

The State Administration for Market Regulation and the Ministry of Education jointly announced the list of pilot programs on Tuesday. A total of 281 pilot projects have been selected across 253 higher education institutions in 30 provincial regions.

The pilot program covers key national industries and livelihood sectors, including artificial intelligence, intelligent manufacturing, the low-altitude economy, food quality and safety, and the modern service sector.

More than 80 percent of the pilot projects have brought in enterprises, research institutions and other standardization-related entities as joint participants, with 373 organizations involved in the collaboration.

Through the program, nearly 40,000 professionals with both solid professional backgrounds and proficiency in standardization knowledge and skills are expected to be trained, effectively alleviating the urgent shortage of talent in key industries, according to authorities.

The pilot program operates through three distinct models. The public education model requires institutions to offer at least three public elective courses on standardization, totaling no fewer than three credits, to at least 400 students within a two-year period. This model aims to enhance students' understanding of standardization theories and methods, cultivating professionals with fundamental standardization knowledge.

The professional education model requires institutions to offer at least four standardization-related specialized courses, including at least two compulsory courses, totaling no fewer than six credits. Alternatively, institutions may offer one or more "mini-major" programs in standardization, with at least six courses totaling no fewer than 10 credits. This model helps students understand how standardization is applied in real-world industry settings and trains them to use standardization methodologies to solve professional problems.

The multi-degree model involves establishing second bachelor's degree programs in standardization-related fields, with at least 20 students over a period of no more than four years. This model aims to cultivate high-caliber talent with both deep professional foundations and cutting-edge standardization expertise.
