DPP accused of ignoring public opinion, smearing mainland's goodwill due to political considerations
The Chinese mainland, on Wednesday, accused Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party authorities of acting against people's well-being by obstructing a mainland policy package aimed at enhancing cross-Strait exchanges.
Zhang Han, spokeswoman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said at a regular news conference that the DPP authorities have ignored public opinion on the island and disregarded the interests and well-being of Taiwan compatriots.
She criticized the DPP authorities for smearing and attacking the mainland's goodwill and measures introduced to benefit Taiwan compatriots, while engaging in political manipulation and attempting to resume dialogue without recognizing the 1992 Consensus. "These moves will only place them increasingly in opposition to mainstream public opinion on the island," she said.
The package of 10 measures released by the mainland on April 12 covers cross-Strait exchange and cooperation in sectors such as party-to-party communication, tourism, trade, infrastructure connectivity and culture.
On Monday, the Taiwan Chamber of Commerce convened representatives from seven major industries on the island, including tourism, hotels and food services, for a news conference where they put forward proposals in response to the policy package.
Participants said the measures are significant for Taiwan's businesses and industries and urged the DPP authorities to adopt a pragmatic approach, without allowing political considerations to affect economic development and people's livelihoods.
Zhang said the views expressed by Taiwan's industries show that the policy package aligns with the needs of industrial recovery on the island and helps address economic and livelihood challenges.
Stressing that exchange and integration are shared aspirations across the Taiwan Strait, Zhang called on the DPP authorities to stop political manipulation, follow mainstream public opinion and adjust their stance on cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation.
The policy package was announced as a delegation from the Chinese Kuomintang, led by Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun, concluded its visit to the mainland and was seen as an outcome of the trip. The DPP authorities argued that the measures should be negotiated between the governments of both sides, rather than through party-to-party channels.
Zhang described the DPP authorities' approach as prioritizing one party's interests over people's livelihoods, a stance that has drawn widespread criticism on the island.
Various sectors in Taiwan have voiced support for the measures and hope to benefit from them as soon as possible, Zhang said. "Only the DPP authorities have come forward to attack, smear and oppose them," she said.
She said the response of the DPP authorities again exposes their intent to pursue "Taiwan independence", as well as their role in undermining cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation, harming people's well-being and acting against public interests.
A public opinion poll conducted in Taiwan after Cheng's visit showed that 64.6 percent of respondents believe that strengthening cross-Strait exchanges and fostering positive relations would help maintain peace and stability, while 50.7 percent support proactively addressing and discussing the issue of reunification.
Zhang said the visit by Cheng's delegation has contributed to the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and helped safeguard the interests and well-being of Taiwan compatriots.
"Reunification is Taiwan's only future and is tied to the interests and well-being of Taiwan compatriots," she said, adding that "Taiwan independence" is a dead end that would only bring grave harm to the Taiwan Strait.
Regarding implementation of the policy package, Zhang said the mainland is willing to work with relevant departments in Taiwan to establish a dialogue mechanism on the basis of upholding the 1992 Consensus and opposing "Taiwan independence".
