China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC), parent of PetroChina Co Ltd, said its unit Dalian PetroChemical Co has completed the construction of a facility capable of producing low sulfur fuel, in compliance with the stricter Euro-IV emission standards.

The completion of the facility came ahead of the implementation of stricter city emissions regulations for the Olympic Games, CNPC said.

Dalian PetroChemical will supply 20,000 ton clear gasoline, to be produced by the 200,000 ton-capacity-per-year catalytic hydrogenation unit, to Beijing during the Olympic Games next year, it said.

Last month, Sinopec said it has also installed a new 1.2 million ton-per year desulphuring facility capable of cutting sulphur content in gasoline to below 10 parts per million (ppm) at its Yanshan refinery.

Gasoline produced from this facility will also meet the Euro IV emission standards when they come into full effect, CNPC said.

In the run-up to the 2008 Olympics, fuel in the capital city needs to be made Euro IV-compliant at 50 ppm sulphur content.

China's revised gasoline standard will lead to the withdrawal from the market of gasoline with sulfur levels of up to 500 ppm on December 31, 2009.
