Macao's visitor expenditure drops 5% in Q1

Per capita spending of visitors to Macao decreased five percent year-on-year to 1,638 patacas ($207) in the first quarter of 2009, according to the figures released Monday by the city's Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).

Analyzed by place of residence, per-capita spending of Chinese mainland visitors took the lead, at 3,948 patacas, and per capita spending of those from South East Asia, Taiwan and Hong Kong reached 1,757 patacas, 1,592 patacas and 1,040 patacas respectively, the DSEC figures indicated.

Among the visitors, per capita spending of tourists went down by one percent year-on-year to 2,329 patacas, and that of same-day visitors dropped 15 percent to 492 patacas in the first quarter, according to the DSEC.

Meanwhile, the average length of stay of visitors decreased 0.1 day from the first quarter of 2008 to 1.1 days in the period, with mainland visitors staying an average of 1.5 days, the DSEC said.
