Should you follow a boss to a new job?

It can cause considerable confusion if your boss leaves and asks you to accompany him or her. You may have no idea what you might be getting into. Even if the opportunity looks really good, it is still not an easy call. On the one hand, you do not wish to disappoint the departing boss; on the other hand, you do not know what will happen in the near future if you follow him or her.

Will you really benefit from your boss' move? Mostly, we say this is one of the best opportunities, but it depends on the situation. The benefits are obvious: First, the boss knows you well and you know him or her well so this can remove trust issues; secondly, it might provide you with a dream platform and at least you will be able to work together comfortably; thirdly, the most exciting part is that you might get a bigger salary than with other new job opportunities.

Preparation is always necessary. Before you make decision, there are some things to be aware of that might damage your future.

Tips: 1. Do check the references of the company your departing boss is leaving for.

This includes the new company's background, its business scope, business circumstances and what its next stage of development will be. Be careful of changes in stockholdings and any uncertainties.

2. Know more about the role's team structure.

Does anyone there take similar responsibilities as you would be given? If there is and that person is likely to compete with you, is that something you could handle? The personalities of the new team members are also of great importance because you have to see them and work with them every day.

3. Get a written undertaking about your responsibilities to avoid any uncertainties.

Undoubtedly the boss cannot tell you all the risks and the negative aspects of the company. Try to avoid anything unexpected turning up by discussing fully what is expected of you and get it in writing.

4. Ask yourself what you want.

Do not ignore your own needs. Are you going to feel happy every day, or are you going to make money? Nothing is perfect; you choose the one with the most benefits, and if that is the new job, take it.
