Key developments in Sino-Pakistani relations(China Daily)Updated: 2006-11-25 16:27 May 21, 1951: China and Pakistan establish diplomatic relations. Since then, the two countries have witnessed the smooth development of friendly and neighbourly relations. April 1955: Premier Zhou Enlai holds talks with Pakistani Prime Minister M. Ali during the Bandung Conference, where both sides agree that bilateral ties should be strengthened. 1956: At the invitation of the Chinese Government, Pakistani Prime Minister H.E. Sulawadi pays an official visit to China in October. In December of the same year, Premier Zhou visits Pakistan. 1963: China and Pakistan sign their first trade agreement in January. In March, the two countries sign a boundary agreement. 1964: Premier Zhou visits Pakistan in February and Pakistani President Ayub Khan visits China in December. November 1970: Pakistan President Yahay Khan visits China. In May 1980: Pakistani President Zia-ul Haq visits China. October 1982: The China-Pakistan Economy, Trade and Technology Joint Committee is established. 1989: Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto visits China in February, and Premier Li Peng visits Pakistan in November. December 1996: President Jiang Zemin pays a state visit to Pakistan, during which the two countries decided to establish a comprehensive partnership. 2001: Premier Zhu Rongji visits Pakistan in May and Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf pays a state visit to China in December. May 2003: Pakistani Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali pays an official visit to China. November 2003, President Hu Jintao holds talks with Pakistani President Musharraf in Beijing. April 2005: Premier Wen Jiabao pays a three-day visit to Pakistan, the first stop in his South Asian tour. Wen's visit aims to further strengthen the friendship and strategic partnership between the two countries In 2005, the trade volume between the two countries exceeded US$4.3 billion, a year-on-year increase of 39 per cent. Bilateral trade could reach US$15 billion within five years. |
