Hubby carves stone path for wife's tumor recovery

Tuo Benzhi (L) and his wife Gong Jinghua, a brain tumor survivor, help clean the 600-plus-step stone hiking path which 58-year-old Tuo carved for her recuperation, in Pengshui Miao and Tujia autonomous county of southwest China's Chongqing municipality, October 13, 2009. Doctors found an egg-sized tumor in Gong's brain when she was rushed to hospital after falling into a deep coma five years ago. The subsequent three craniotomy surgeries cost the family 380,000 yuan ($55,600). Fortunately, Gong survived, although shaky and unable to speak or walk. Her husband, an employee at a removal contractor with a meager income, couldn't afford the recuperation treatment, so he came up with his own way of curing his wife -- carving a stone-step path on a hill nearby and encouraging Gong to climb to recovery. Two years later when Gong went in for a re-inspection, doctors were astounded by her improvement, saying it was "a miracle". Gong could now top the 300-meter-high hill in two hours. The couple's DIY efforts turned into a local phenomenon, with over 300 climbers joining them, Chongqing Evening News reported. [cqwb.com.cn]
