Chinese locomotive maker nabs big deal from Turkey

CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Company Limited (ZELC) announced it would transfer light rail vehicles worth 350 million yuan ($51.26 million) as of April 2012 to Izmir, Turkey's third most populous city, xinhuanet.com reported Sunday.

European countries have very strict requirements on safety, comfort, energy-saving, and environmentally-friendliness of rail locomotives, according to Han Jun, the company's publicity officer.

ZELC's winning of the order means that China's domestically-made light rail locomotives, which have intellectual property rights, have already gained international competitiveness, he added.

ZELC was founded in 1936 and manufactured China's first main line electric locomotive in 1958.
