World media keeps close watch on 'two sessions'(Xinhua)
Updated: 2009-03-04 22:57 BEIJING -- Overseas media are keeping a close watch on the two annual sessions of China's top legislative body and top political advisory body, particularly China's additional measures to stimulate domestic demand and to improve the people's livelihood. The National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) has received close to 300 proposals, most of which concern economic topics, like how to expand domestic demand, the employment of rural immigrant workers in medium and small cities, and effective ways to guarantee food production and agricultural revenues, Japan's Asahi Shimbun newspaper reported on Wednesday.
The top political advisor stressed that issues related to people's livelihood must be solved properly and the focus of the efforts will be put on employment, social welfare, health care and food safety, the newspaper said. The Sankei Shimbun newspaper said guaranteeing employment and social stability have become urgent affairs against the backdrop of a raging financial storm. What people are concerned most at the sessions is what kind of remedy will be prescribed to secure an 8 percent growth of the economy, the paper said. When external demand is weak, how to increase infrastructure spending and stimulate domestic consumption becomes essential, it said. The Chinese government announced a four-trillion-yuan (580-billion-dollar) economic stimulus plan last year and launched a subsidy program for the rural population to buy home electrical appliances, the paper said.
An editorial of the People's Daily has called on China's top political advisory body to made due contributions to help the country weather through difficulties.
