-- China drafts its first Five-Year Plan, which projects the country's industrialization. It specifies 156 projects covering iron and steel, automobile, airplane, shipping, machinery, nuclear energy and chemical industries.

-- The Korean War Armistice Agreement is signed on July 27, seeking to "ensure a complete cessation of hostilities and of all acts of armed force" on the Korean Peninsula.
