Beijing sees first forgery case for alien residence

BEIJING -- Beijing police said on Friday that it had uncovered the first case of using fake documents to apply for residence permits for foreigners.

Police detained one suspect surnamed Zhou at the Beijing Exit-Entry Administration Office on Thursday, while he was applying for temporary residence permits on behalf of four Russians.

Police said the foreigners used forged educational documents in the permit application, and the company cachets on their work permits were also false.

Zhou, who is an employee in a representative office of a Russian company in Beijing, has admitted that he had used forged seals to "fabricate" documents for foreigners who want to get resident permits. But he didn't say how many forgeries he had made.

Police didn't disclose the identities of the Russians.

The case is still under investigation.

Figures from the police office showed there were 110,000 foreigners with resident permits in Beijing by the end of 2008, and police repatriated about 400 foreigners illegally entering, staying or working in the city.
