Man held over revenge nude photos online

SHANGHAI: Police have detained a man who allegedly posted nude photographs of his ex-girlfriend on the Internet after she broke up with him.

"Zhu Hui (the accused) has been in detention since May 14," Zeng Qi, the attorney of the girl, whose identity is being withheld, told China Daily Tuesday.

On May 8, Zhu, who went by the pseudonym "garros" uploaded 40 nude pictures of the woman on a website - namipan.com - in a "fit of rage" after she dumped him.

Zhu claimed the woman broke up with him because he was unable to find a suitable job. He even posted the woman's name, age, home address and the names of the schools she attended, alongside the sexually explicit photographs.

Even though the website administrators tried their best to delete the images, they claimed the photographs were uploaded "again and again".

Zeng Qi said the victim had hired him to minimize the impact of the incident on her life and to bring the accused to justice.

"We are hoping people will treat the victim with kindness and sympathy, and help her get through the harshest moment in her life," read a statement released by the victim's lawyers.

"The victim has the right to take legal action against any enterprise or individual who has copied, distributed or forwarded the pictures."

Zeng said the 23-year-old woman has a job in Shanghai, but declined to comment on how the incident had affected her career. Spreading pornographic pictures or information is a criminal offense in China punishable up to life in prison.

Last October, a saleswoman with an Italian sportswear firm, uploaded a 12-minute video of herself in acts of sex. The police detained her in December.

Last Wednesday, a computer technician was found guilty of stealing sexually explicit pictures of Hong Kong star Edison Chen with some female celebrities, and sentenced to eight and a half months behind bars.
