Information technology giant PeopleSoft revealed yesterday that it will further expand its operations in China, with the opening of another office in the country.

PeopleSoft Asia and Japan Senior Vice-President Murray Creighton said the new office would be located in Shanghai, joining one which the firm opened in Beijing last March.

Speaking in the capital, Creighton said: "It is a perfect time for PeopleSoft to increase our investment in China with its further opening-up, the reform of the finance sector, its entry into the World Trade Organization and most importantly the fast growing Chinese economy.''

PeopleSoft, the world's second largest enterprise software manufacturer, is expanding its operations in China in order to meet growing customer demand.

The Shanghai office is expected to employ nine people working on sales, consultation and technical support for the eastern and southern China market.

The US software vendor currently employs 15 people in Beijing, but it is also recruiting more staff to be engaged in the localization and translation of its software.

PeopleSoft also said yesterday that it would provide finance management solutions to China's fifth largest bank, the Bank of Communications, and human resource solutions to the China Minsheng Bank, completing both projects by the end of this year.

"As we look at the China market in short term, we will put strong focus on the human resources and financial management software segments,'' said Creighton.

With the two contracts, the total number of PeopleSoft's software customers has reached 50 in the past year, since its entry into the Chinese market.

Creighton said that his company will publish a plan on the organizational restructuring of PeopleSoft and enterprise resource planning software vendor J.D. Edwards in August.

PeopleSoft signed an agreement with J.D. Edwards on June 2 to purchase all its outstanding shares on the US NASDAQ stock market.

Although J.D. Edwards has had a longer presence in China, with 30 employees and more than 50 customers since the establishment of its first branch about 10 years ago, Creighton said that it will be integrated into PeopleSoft's operations.

He believed that with PeopleSoft's focus on high-end enterprise solutions market and J.D. Edwards' strength in medium-size business sector, the combination will greatly elevate his company's position in China.
