Pingtan encourages higher learning institutions from Taiwan and the Chinese mainland to join efforts in founding Pingtan University, secondary and higher-education schools, and vocational and technical schools in the pilot zone.
Pingtan has always been an important coastal defense spot. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, it speeded up the island construction and attached great importance to coastal defense.
