China urges broad-based government in Afghanistan

China supports the establishment in Afghanistan of a broad-based government which represents the rights and interests of all the ethnic groups in that country, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue.

China supports the resolution passed by the UN Security Council for the establishment of a transitional administration in Afghanistan, with the UN taking a leading role in solving the Afghanistan issue, Zhang said at a regular press conference Tuesday in Beijing.

The most important thing at present is to encourage all parties in Afghanistan to establish a transitional administration as early as possible, she said.

The international society should support political negotiations inside Afghanistan and assist all parties establish common understanding, she added.

China also hopes that all Afghan groups will endeavour to bring peace, stability and social development back to Afghanistan and to reach an amicable settlement between different ethnic groups, keeping the long-term interests of their country foremost, she said.

As a permanent member of the UN Security Council and a neighbor of Afghanistan, China has made continuous efforts to return Afghanistan to peace, Zhang noted.

China would like to participate in the rebuilding of Afghanistan together with the international community when that country regains peace and stability, she added.
