Bergqvist and Montgomery eye records in Stockholm
( 2003-08-05 09:37) (Agencies)

Sweden's Kajsa Bergqvist has her eye on the women's high jump world record at a Super Grand Prix meeting on Tuesday, while American Tim Montgomery, the 100 metres world record holder, hopes to break the stadium record.

Bergqvist, the European champion, set a world best for the year of 2.06 metres in Eberstadt, Germany, on July 26 and has not ruled out breaking Bulgarian Stefka Kostadinova's 16-year old world record of 2.09.

"I hope I can do it some day, maybe tomorrow (Tuesday)," said Bergqvist, who failed at 2.10 in Eberstadt. "When I jump the way I want to jump, I jump high," she added.

The Swede said she was in good shape and could go for the record if conditions were perfect at the 1912 Olympic stadium.

Montgomery, who set the world 100 metres record of 9.78 seconds last September in Paris but has only run 10.04 this season, wished for warm weather and a tailwind.

"The stadium is fast...after today, what I've done today in practice, I know I can run under 9.87 tomorrow," he said.

"Just give me good weather, no rain, tailwind, and everything is going to take care of itself."

The Stockholm meet will also pit triple jump world and Olympic champion Jonathan Edwards of Britain, the world record holder, against Christian Olsson, the Swedish European champion who has this year's world best with 17.77 metres.

Russian pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva, who set a world record of 4.82 metres on July 13 at Gateshead, England, will jump against her main rivals Svetlana Feofanova of Russia and Stacy Dragila of the United States.

"I will try to jump five metres," Isinbayeva said, adding, however, that she did not believe that height would be achieved by a woman until next year.

The Stockholm meet just a few weeks comes ahead of the world championships in Paris which run from August 23-31.
