Universities are considering restricting the use of cellphones in venues such as libraries and classrooms to curb rampant "cellphone abuse" on campus, reports Information Times.

In a survey of freshmen in Guangzhou, more than one-third said they owned a cellphone and another third said they intended to purchase one soon.

Meanwhile, complaints of disturbances created by cellphones ringing in classrooms and libraries are frequent.

And late-night message swapping - if not late-night chatting - on cellphones is ubiquitous in dormitories.

So far, there are no university policies against the use of cellphones, but all university officials interviewed by the newspaper agreed something had to be done.

People using cellphones in libraries should be denied entrance for a period, while those using cellphones in classrooms should be fined, said one official.
