Aragones returns to Real Mallorca
( 2003-10-13 09:32) (Agencies)

Spain's most experienced top flight coach Luis Aragones will be returning to take charge at Real Mallorca for the second time in his career, the Primera Liga club said on Sunday.

The 65-year-old coach left Mallorca two years ago to return to former club Atletico Madrid after guiding the islanders through one of their most successful ever league campaigns.

Mallorca said on their website that Aragones would be presented to the media on Monday after taking the first team for training.

He takes over the team from caretaker manager Tomeu Llompart, who was drafted in following the sacking of Portuguese coach Jaime Pacheco after just five games of the season.

Last time Aragones took charge of Mallorca they ended up qualifying for the Champions League after finishing in third place behind Real Madrid and Deportivo Coruna and impressed the pundits with their attractive brand of attacking football.

He left after just one season to rejoin Atletico Madrid as coach for the fifth time in his career and steered the side to promotion as second division champions in his first season at the helm.

He had a difficult second campaign at Atletico, though, threatening to leave the club on several occasions after a series of public disagreements with then president Jesus Gil.

Although he guided the club to a respectable 12th place finish he departed in acrimonious circumstances at the end of last season.

Noted for his outspoken comments and wry sense of humour, Aragones is the most experienced coach in Spanish football having coached nine different Primera Liga sides including Barcelona, Real Betis and Valencia.

As chance would have it his first match in charge of Mallorca will be against his former side Atletico at the Calderon on Sunday.

In a further twist of fate Atletico are now coached by former Mallorca boss Gregorio Manzano who led the islanders to a ninth place finish in the league and victory in the King's Cup.

Mallorca are in 16th place in the Primera Liga standings, two places and one point ahead of Atletico who have made a surprisingly poor start to the season.
