Rules tougher on copyright
( 2003-11-13 10:28) (China Daily)

The National Copyright Administration is improving the nation's copyright laws by instituting four new regulations, including ones to protect folk literature and the rights of network information distribution, China Daily learned Wednesday.

Regulations will also control payments for radio and television broadcasting and for group management for copyrights of certain artwork.

For example, the China Music Copyright Association is in charge of authorizing copyright for music broadcast in hotels or other locations, the administration said.

The administration will also intensify copyright legal enforcement by having regional intellectual property management departments join forces with local public security offices, industry and commerce officials, and customs and culture sectors in an effort to slash pirating activities, said Duan Yuping, an administration official.

Authorities across the country have taken great steps to crack down on illegal activities, Duan said.

From January to October this year, for instance, officials seized 22 illegal compact disk production lines.

Fighting against copyright violations to protect domestic and overseas copyright owners is a long-term task, however, Duan indicated.

This year, an anti-pirate action has successfully helped protect the rights of eight foreign companies.

In June, the Julong Law Firm in South China's Guangdong Province accepted a lawsuit on behalf of eight companies in the United States, Britain and Canada.

The suit charges that the Longchuangjie Art Shop in Guangzhou, capital city of the province, illegally produced and sold copyrighted art work from the eight firms without permission.

In July, the Guangzhou Copyright Bureau seized 137,000 decorative pictures in the shop, and 105,000 of them were copied from the eight companies.

In August, supervised by the Guangzhou Copyright Bureau, the shop destroyed all the copied works.
