Shanghai set to train more "grey collars"

A personnel official in the
eastern commercial hub Shanghai has said the city is poised to train more "grey
collar" professionals to meet the demands of the local job market.
Advertising copy writers, network administrators, fashion designers and
programmers were most frequently sought after by local headhunters and were
among the most popular choices for job- hunters, said Zhu Junyi, director of the
Shanghai Municipal Labor and Social Security Bureau.
These "grey collar" professionals, who were expected to combine the book
knowledge of white-collar professionals with the nimble fingers of blue-collar
workers, were needed by the traditional manufacturing industry as well as the
rising service sector, where creativity was crucial, said Zhu.
While schools would recruit more students for these practical fields, the
city also planed to set up a dozen vocational training centers to make up for
the shortage, he told a recent seminar in Shanghai.
Insiders say the training of "grey collars" will also help relieve the
pressure for college graduates who may not easily find a white-collar job but do
not want to start their career as a blue- collar worker.
