S.Korea expresses concerns over `Taiwan referendum'

The government of Republic of Korea (ROK) on Saturday expressed concerns over the so called "Taiwan referendum" slated to be held on March 20 and reiterated Seoul will continue to hold the "one China" policy.

A statement of the ROK Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade stated, "Exchanges and cooperation between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan have been persistently maintained thus far ... Our government has worries over recent Taiwan moves that can cause cross-strait tensions."

"The government will continue to stick to the 'one China' policy," said the statement.

In a unilateral move, leader of Taiwan authorities Chen Shui-bian proposed two questions for the March 20 referendum. It is seen as the Taiwan authorities' attempt to seek "Taiwan independence" and has aroused opposition from various circles on both sides of the Taiwan Straits.

A number of counties have expressed concerns over or oppositionto the referendum, which they say would harm stability in the Asia-Pacific region.
