U.S. boost security to athletes
(Xinhua)
Updated: 2004-04-02 10:12

U.S. athletes will travel to the Athens Olympic Games on flights with beefed-up security and are being urged to stay in the Olympic Village rather than in local housing for safety reasons, the Washington Posts reported Thursday.

The U.S. Olympic team also will have an evacuation strategy for departing the Games in the event of a major terrorist attack, Jim Scherr, U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) Chief Executive Officer, told the paper.

"This is a unique situation which warrants different measures than previous Games," Scherr said.

Larry Buendorf, USOC Chief of Security, said the U.S. team willreceive additional protection from Greek and international authorities during the Games between Aug. 13-29.

Buendorf insured the measure will not be intense as usual because "We're not going to make this an armed departure and arrival area."

The security preparation of the Games will cost at least US$800 million.
