China wins Beijing international marathon relay
A Chinese women team clocked two hours, 19 minutes and 52 seconds to win the Beijing International Marathon Relay here Sunday morning. Japan finished second in 2:22:31, followed by the United States, 2" Sun Yingjie, bronze medalist for the women's 5,000 meters at the world athletics championships in Paris last summer, ran the first leg for China, but her performance of 33 minutes and 48 seconds was way out of her best form. Xing Huina, another Chinese medal hopeful for the Athens Olympics this summer, also displayed a poor form, wound up the next leg second to the Japanese squad. Sun, who injured her collar bone last winter, only recovered her training recently. "I prefer to run the 5,000m and 10,000m at the Athens Olympics, but maybe I will be asked to run the Marathon instead of the 5,000m," Sun said after today's race. Wang Dexian, coach of the Chinese runner, admitted that Sun is in a poor form. "She will take part in the London Marathon later this month, and then we will see what two events she is going to compete in the Olympic Games." The men's marathon relay title was won by a local Chinese university team with a time of 2:07:16. There were no international runners in the men's section.
