'Artificial beauty' may sue pageant organizers

Yang says she would consider a lawsuit if the competition's Beijing organizing committee refused to recall their decision.

A pretty Chinese girl has been barred from competing for Miss Beijing in the 2004 Miss Intercontinental competition because her beauty was not born, but artificially made.

Known in China as an "artificial" or "man-made" beauty, Yang Yuan, an 18-year old model, said she would consider a lawsuit if the competition's Beijing organizing committee refused to recall their decision.

In February this year, she spent 110,000 yuan (13,250 US dollars) on cosmetic surgery in Beijing to change her plain-looking face as a way to brighten her future modeling career.

Chen Huagang, Yang's lawyer, said Yang would be the first person who received cosmetic surgery to safeguard her legal rights.

As not a single regulation of the competition read that such people could not take part in the contest, Chen said he would help Yang in fighting for her rights, claiming that the wording of calling Yang "an artificial beauty" in the organizing committee's notification was a personal insult to Yang.

But sources of the Beijing organizing committee said candidates should demonstrate their real beauty. It would be unfair to the other candidates if they allowed a "man-made" beauty to participate.

The final decision has yet to be made by the international organizing committee, said the sources, who refused to comment if there would be any actions against Yang's possible lawsuit.
