China to strengthen consultations on Mideast issues

A visiting Chinese envoy said in Damascus Monday that China will strengthen consultations and coordinations with relative countries on the Middle East issues.

Wang Shijie, the Chinese Special Envoy on the Middle East, made the remark at a press conference after meeting with Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Naji Otri and other senior officials.

The Arab countries were making utmost efforts, although facing complex situations, to solve the problems in the region in a peaceful way, which has been chosen as a strategic measure, Wang said.

Syria was an important part of the Middle East peace process and without whose participation the region cannot reach a comprehensive and lasting peace, he said.

China firmly supported Syria's efforts in restoring the occupied Golan Heights and hoped that Syria and Israel could restart negotiations as soon as possible, he added.

As for the Sino-Syrian relations, Wang said both countries were satisfied with their relations, hoping to further develop them in the future.

Syria highly appreciated the huge achievements China made after it took a reform and opening-up policy in the late 1970s and the active role China plays in the international affairs, Wang said.

When answering questions about the recently imposed US sanctions on Syria, Wang said China opposed, as always, to apply sanctions as an easy way in dealing with inter-state relations.

China insisted that differences between countries should be settled through equal negotiations, he added.

China appreciated the Syrian position to resolve differences with the United States through dialogue, he said.

On the Palestinian issue, Wang pointed out that the sufferings of the Palestinian people was continuing, which can only be resolved through restoring their legitimate rights, including the establishment of an independent country.

He called on Israel to stop military attacks and targeted killings of the Palestinians and stop building the security wall.

On Iraq, the envoy stressed that it was crucial to fully restore sovereignty to the Iraqi people as soon as possible.

Wang arrived in Damascus Friday for a five-day official visit here, which was the last leg of his three-nation Middle East tour, with Palestine and Jordan his first two destinations.
