Mazda 6 recall deals below to FAW Car

FAW Car Co, which lists shares on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, recalled its Mazda 6 cars starting Friday due to defects in the vehicles' emission and oil tank design, a top government agency said.

From Friday, FAW Car, a unit of China FAW Group Corp, would recall Mazda 6 models produced from December 26, 2002 to March 25, 2004, China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said.

A statement posted on the administration's Web site said the defect had to do with insufficient spacing between the heat protection device of the vehicle's oil tank and its emission tube.

FAW Car makes Mazda 6 under a technical license from Japan's Mazda Motor Corp.

The vehicles being recalled were the Mazda 6 CA7230AT models, the statement said.

The statement said the insufficient spacing between the emission tube and protective covering for the oil tank made it possible for the pressure to rise in the tank when the car was in operation, resulting in possible distortion or dissolution to the walls of the oil tank.

FAW Car would recall the cars and fix the problem, which was discovered by Japan's Mazda through laboratory experiments, the statement said.

No incidents related to the defects had been reported in China so far, the administration said.

FAW plans to fix the defect by replacing the protective covering on the oil tank with an upgraded cover, adding a heat prevention cushion to the tank and also adding short glass fiber to the heat prevention device.

The Mazda 6 cars accounted for roughly half of vehicles sold by FAW Car last year.

The company has said it sold more than 24,000 Mazda 6 models last year, helping to boost its total car sales to more than 50,000 units and boosting net profit for the the year by 78 percent.

In the first quarter of this year, FAW Car has said it sold about 12,000 Mazda 6s. Net profit for the firm, based in the northeastern Jilin Province, jumped to 172.9 million yuan (US$20.88 million) in the January to March period from 10.3 million yuan a year earlier.
