Late goal puts Brazil past Chile

A goal from Luis Fabiano in injury time earned World Cup holders Brazil a narrow 1-0 win over Chile to share the lead in Group C with Paraguay.

Chile were given a good opportunity to take the lead in the first half. After a foul on Sebastián Gonzalez, the forward was given a penalty but after scoring, referee Rodríguez decided that the spotkick had to be retaken as one of Chile's other players had stepped in too soon.

Gonzalez failed to score a second time and Brazil escaped as the score remained 0-0. During the rest of the first half neither team scored and the same seemed to happen in the second half until Luis Fabiano put the ball past the Chilean goalkeeper in stoppage time.

Thanks to this late goal, Brazil and Paraguay share the lead in the group, both with three points, while Chile and Costa Rica trail with zero points.
