Monaco sink troubled PSG 1-0 to go top

Monaco moved top of Ligue 1 after a late winner by striker Emmanuel Adebayor on Sunday sealed troubled Paris St Germain's second consecutive home defeat.

Adebayor headed home seven minutes from time to seal the principality side's fourth victory of the season.

The victory moved Monaco up from fifth place in the 20-club standings before the weekend matches to stand one point ahead of AJ Auxerre who crushed 10-man Metz 4-0 earlier on Sunday.

Monaco's win was a relief to Didier Deschamps's team after their 2-0 midweek defeat by Liverpool in the Champions League.

Ambitious PSG, among the favourites to win the title before the season, are without a win in their first six league matches and stand 17th with just three points alongside promoted Istres.

The Parisian fans expressed their anger at the end of the match as they called for the resignation of coach Vahid Halilhodzic and club chairman Francis Graille.

"I can understand the fans are upset even if we have played much better tonight," Graille told a news conference. "Obviously our position in the table doesn't match our ambitions.

"Vahid and I are going to have a late dinner together tonight and we're going to try review the situation quietly."

NO SHAME

Asked if he was considering replacing his coach, Graille said he did not have that option in mind for the time being.

"I'm sad about this defeat but I think the guys played much better tonight and we bowed to a better side than us. We don't have to be ashamed of ourselves," he said.

AJ Auxerre confirmed they are not to be taken lightly as they demolished 10-man Metz at home.

Striker Benjani Mwaruwari scored twice in the first 20 minutes to put the Burgundy side on the winning track before Bonaventure Kalou wrapped up the victory in the 24th.

Metz were reduced to 10 men when midfielder Venn Toure was sent off for a second bookable offence just past the hour.

The home side added a fourth goal thanks to midfielder Lionel Mathis after 68 minutes to seal their most convincing victory so far this season.

Auxerre are second in the table with 12 points above Bastia and Olympique Lyon who drew 0-0 at Gerland stadium on Saturday.

Bottom club Nice fought back to beat Sochaux 2-1 at home for their first league success this season.

The Riviera team were losing 1-0 after Fabien Boudarene had opened the scoring in the 12th minute but they hit back through striker Marama Vahirua before midfielder Victor Agali slotted home the winning goal three minutes into the second half.
