Beijing Hyundai settle dispute with CFA
China Super League club Beijing Hyundai look to have made peace with the China Football Association (CFA) following a a refereeing decision in a league match at the beginning of October.
The club were fined and docked three points last week for walking off the pitch with 10 minutes to go of their game against Shenyang Ginde on October 2 after the referee had awarded Shenyang a penalty. The Beijing club had threatened to quit the league altogether but common sense seems to have prevailed and the club returned to action at the weekend, beating Qingdao Bright 2-0. It seems that the CFA's decision to punish the referee in charge of the game of Octobver 2 persuaded Bejing officials not to carry out their threat to quit the Siemens mobile Super League, which is in its first season. The CFA decided on Friday to ban referee Zhou Weixin for the rest of the season. The club, meanwhile, was fined 300,000 RMB a ($36,000) and docked three points. Although the dispute seems to have been settled, Beijing are said to be unhappy that the CFA awarded a 3-0 win to Shenyang Ginde. Beijing's actions have also provoked widespread criticism of the CFA's management of the Super League, which has failed to spark the anticpated interest among fans in China. The new league was reduced to 14 teams with the aim of improving standards and increasing attendances. Critics, of which there are many, argue that neither has happened yet. Last week, Dalian Shide, seven-time league champions, declared that a new professional league, run by the clubs, should be launched. At the request of Beijing Hyundai, a special meeting of commissioners of the Super League will be convened under the CFA in order to discuss the future direction of the league. |
