UN: China can curb gender imbalance
(CRI)
Updated: 2004-10-24 10:07

A United Nation official says China can still resolve its problem of having more males born than females.

The delegate of the UN Fund for Population Activities in China made the comment at an international forum on population and sustainable development.

She said the UN appreciates the measures taken by China to deal with the problem, including banning the use of ultrasound to find out the sex of unborn children.

The official estimates that the imbalance between males and females will return normal by the end of 2050 in China

Because of traditional ideas favouring males, the ratio of newborn boys to girls in China is now 117:100.
