Chinese police have cracked down on 1,045 drug gangs, arresting 10,537 suspects and seized 6.27 tons of illegal drugs since Aug. 1, the government said Wednesday.

Drug-related funds of 77.85 million yuan (9.38 million US dollars) were also seized in the four-month anti-drug campaign, said Chen Yicun, deputy-director of anti-drug department under the Ministry of Public Security.

"Despite the achievement, 12 policemen died and two were injured in the campaign," Chen said.

Drugs rounded in include 2.03 tons of marijuana, 33 times more that of the previous year and 73.74 kg of ecstasy, a year-on rise of 16 times, he said.

There were also 3.15 tons of heroin, 218.87 kg of opium, 436.24 kg of "ice," 11.95 tons of opium poppies and 96.42 tons of chemicals for drug manufacture.

"Drug prices were soaring at present when drugs were hard to come by in some markets," Chen said.

The wholesale price of heroin rocketed 126 percent on the southwestern borders in Yunnan province while retail price in south and central China also jumped 49.8 percent.

Chinese police cracked 66 cross-border drug trafficking gangs since August, with the large case ringing in 463 kg of heroin via cooperation with the Thai police.

Chen said the ministry had listed 32 suspects for arrest since August, with three already being ready in custody. The government will soon offer a 380,000 yuan (45,783 US dollars) for the arrest of the top five drug traffickers who remain at large.
