Updated: 2004-12-14 17:05

Two passengers trains collided along a stretch of rural track in northern India on Tuesday, and at least 15 people are believed to have been killed.

Railway Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav told reporters that at least 15-20 people were believed to have been killed.

"We are focusing on ... rescue at this moment," Devender Sandhu, a railway spokesman told NDTV television. Fog could have played a role in the accident, he said.

The accident occurred along a rural stretch of track between the cities of Pathankot and Jalandhar, in India's northern Punjab province, about 180 miles northwest of New Delhi.

No other details were immediately available.
