11 killed in North China explosion A cache of explosives at the home of a coal mine manager blew up in a town in North China, killing at least 11 people, Xinhua News Agency reported Thursday.
The explosion occurred Wednesday in Kecheng, a town in Shanxi province, one of China's biggest coal-mining regions. Two of the dead are pupils of a neighboring grade school. Eight people were injured in the accident, including two pupils and six villagers. Seven of the victims died on spot and four others died later in hospitals, according to a report submitted by local authorities to the Shanxi provincial government. The mine manager, identified as Lu Maolin, was among the dead and his wife was injured. Vice-Governor Liang Bin of the province has rushed to the scene to direct the rescue work. |
