Power shortage to be fixed

China is seeking to solve the country's electricity shortage through more effective macro control measures.

Ma Kai, the minister in charge of the State Development and Reform Commission says China's demands for electricity outstrips supply and that's the main cause of the shortage.

In response, the minister says China plans to open new power plants with a total capacity of 65 million kilowatts in 2005.

At the same time, the government will also adjust the economic structure to rein in power consumption.

The official adds that China's power demands have been increasing at an annual rate of fifteen percent in the past two years and the capacity of new plants put into operation last year topped 50 million kilowatts.
