Australian swimmer breaks 100 freestyle record

Australia's Libby Lenton set a world record in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 51.91 seconds in the 25-meter pool at the Australian short-course swimming championships Monday.

Lenton beat the time of 52.17 set by Sweden's Therese Alshammar in Athens on March 17, 2000.

The 20-year-old Lenton also won the 50-meter freestyle at the Montreal world championships in the 50-meter pool as well as gold in the 400-meter medley relay.

"My coach, Stephan (Widmer), asked me whether I wanted to hold back a bit tonight or whether I wanted to go hard," Lenton said. "He suggested I give myself two chances of going hard so I went out tonight with that in mind, hoping to do a PB (personal best)."
