Yangzhou to host 2007 Asian table tennis championships The city of Yangzhou in east-central China has won the right to host the 18th Asian table tennis championships in 2007, the Asian Table Tennis Union (ATTU) announced here on Wednesday. "Congratulations to Yangzhou," said ATTU president Li Furong. " ATTU will give full support to the city in hosting the Asian tournament, and will send officials to inspect the work and preparation. Hope it successful." Vietnam had also shown interest in staging the event in its capital city Hanoi, having launched a bid last May during the 48th World Table Tennis Championships in Shanghai, but withdrawn it on its own initiative. Hanoi will host the Asian Cup of table tennis in 2007. "On behalf of ATTU, I'm very grateful to have the cooperation and support of Vietnam," said Li Furong. "We will strictly follow the requirements set by ATTU...and give all of us to present a successful sports event with improved environment, perfect facilities, carefull organization and enthusiastic service," said Sun Yongru, vice mayor of Yangzhou, in his presentation to ATTU meeting here. Yangzhou, a city on the Grand Canal with a population of 4.7 million and covering 6,638 square kilometers, is among the most promising cities in the Yangtze delta. It was a capital of China in the sixth century a.d. and an important literary and cultural center.
