Top-seeded Rafael Nadal of Spain rallied to beat American Justin Gimelstob 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 on Friday, before resting up for his quarterfinal match to be played later the same day.

Nadal was among four players scheduled to play two matches Friday after rain washed out all of Thursday's play.

Gimelstob didn't make it easy for him, slamming home 10 aces in their 2{ hour contest.

Sweden's Thomas Johansson, the No. 4 seed, was the first to book a place in the semifinals, easing past eighth-seeded Carlos Moya of Spain 7-6 (3), 6-3.

Juan Carlos Ferrero, also of Spain, scored a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Argentina's David Nalbandian for a semifinal berth.

Nadal, the French Open champion, was to face Peter Wessels of the Netherlands in quarterfinal action later Friday.

Wessels beat China's Wang Yu Jr. 6-1, 7-6 (9) earlier to earn his final eight berth.

Also Friday, Argentina's Guillermo Coria, the No. 2 seed, trounced Japan's Toshihide Matsui 6-1, 6-0. Matsui had lost during qualifying and was a last-minute addition to the main draw after fifth-seeded Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia withdrew with an injury before the tournament started.

The No. 7 seed Mikhail Youzhny of Russia defeated Thailand's Danai Udomchoke 7-5, 6-1.

Coria and Youzhny were to play again later Friday in a quarterfinal matchup.
