Mixed feelings for Real's caretaker after Greek defeat
(Reuters)
Updated: 2005-12-07 10:38

Lyon ended on 16 points, six ahead of Real and 12 clear of Rosenborg and Olympiakos.

Caretaker coach Juan Ramon Lopez Caro took charge of Real for the first time since the sacking of Vanderlei Luxemburgo on Sunday and Real took a seventh-minute lead through Sergio Ramos, 19, who climbed high to head home a Thomas Gravesen free kick.

Julio Cesar Baptista hit the crossbar from another free kick and Real looked by far the more comfortable during the first period, the absence of Zinedine Zidane, David Beckham and Ronaldo, among others, barely noticed.

Olympiakos came back strongly in the second half and levelled in spectacular fashion when Erol Bulut latched on to a clearance from Raul Bravo and volleyed home from 20 metres.

Rivaldo missed a straightforward effort from close in but made no mistake when he got a second chance three minutes from time.

PSV Eindhoven power through to knockout phase

EINDHOVEN, Netherlands, Dec 6 (Reuters) - PSV Eindhoven powered through to the Champions League knockout phase on Tuesday when goals by captain Philip Cocu and Jefferson Farfan gave them a 2-0 home victory over Turkey's Fenerbahce.

The result, combined with AC Milan's 3-2 win over Schalke 04 in Italy, meant PSV finished second in Group E on 10 points. Milan won the group on 11 points with Schalke, on eight, having to settle for a place in the UEFA Cup.

Fenerbahce, whose European adventure is over for another season, went behind when midfielder Cocu lost his marker and headed a Farfan free kick into the corner of the net after 14 minutes.

Farfan then converted from close range five minutes from time to seal victory, although the 1988 champions earlier rode their luck when Timmy Simons handled in the area but the referee waved away Fenerbahce's penalty appeals.

The evening started with a minute's silence in memory of Frits Philips who died on Monday. The 100-year-old son of Anton Philips, co-founder of the Dutch electronics group, was involved with the Eindhoven side as a fan and main sponsor all his life.
