you shouldn't go to pieces if you chose c! the world is a big, complicated place, and in the 1500s, scientists, mathematicians, and other scholars thought one of the best ways to understand it was to break it up into smaller bits that were easier to study. the word they adopted for that process of splitting a complex system into simpler elements was "analysis," a term based on "analyein," a greek word meaning "to break up." "analysis" was (and still is) seen as the opposite of "synthesis," which is the process of combining separate parts or elements to form a whole.
